Stuff White People Like

If you haven’t already, you need to check out the ridiculously hilarious blog “Stuff White People Like.”  The blog’s creator, Christian Lander takes several sarcastic (yet undoubtedly accurate) stabs at upper-middle-class white culture, and this Tuesday is your chance to see him live, (and for free) as part of the AB Lecture Series.

When: Tuesday, March 15th @ 7:00PM (Doors open @ 6:40)
Where: McConomy Auditorium

Free Admission!

Candida Höfer, German, b. 1944; Palacio Nacional de Mafra VII, 2006

This exhibit, currently on display in the Heinz Architectural Center in the Museum of Art, explores “our complex relationship to architecture: The physical forms of buildings are subject to their designers’ control, but the impact the built environment has on us is unpredictable, subjective, and often indefinable.” What does this really mean? Massive and gorgeous prints of architectural spaces that almost take up an entire wall. The spaces range form open minimal rooms to the most ornate opera houses. THe exhibit features the work of German photographer Candida Höfer and video and etchings by French artist Cyprien Gaillard. The show is on until May 29 and CMU students, as always, get in the museum for free.

Culture Cake: Have a slice!

The current exhibit at the Regina Miller gallery is “Experimental Geography.” It is described as:

An exhibition that explores the distinctions between geographical study and artistic experience of the earth, as well as the juncture where the two realms collide (and possibly make a new field altogether.)

Confused? Don’t be. The exhibit may sound a bit out there but just take a walk through the one floor show and you will most likely be surprised, disturbed and even charmed by the multimedia pieces. On one wall is a city grid constructed entirely of stitching from army cargo pants. Another city is constructed from textiles and sits comfortably inside a suitcase complete with folksy music and even a night sky. A large wall projection contrasts the journey from Palestine to Israel with the trip the other way around (guess which one is easier.)

The best part is that the whole exhibit took less than 15 minutes to walk through and was free, so step away from your computer screen for a while and enjoy some culture. I promise it won’t hurt.
